Amazon UK Buy Box Basics for Resellers: How the Featured Offer Works

On a shared listing most sales go to whichever offer Amazon features in the box on the product page. Amazon calls it the Featured Offer; sellers still call it the Buy Box. Here is how it works for UK resellers, without the myths.

The short answer

To be considered you need a Professional selling plan, a new item in most categories, healthy account metrics and stock available. Among eligible offers Amazon weighs total price including delivery, delivery speed and seller performance. When several offers are close, the box rotates between them. Amazon does not publish a formula, and it can show no Featured Offer at all if it thinks every price is too high.

Eligibility first

Amazon's help pages list what an offer needs before it can be featured. In practice for a UK reseller that means:

If you meet all of that and still never win, check the listing is not restricted or flagged, and that your offer is live and not stranded. See stranded inventory.

What Amazon weighs

FactorHow it plays out
Landed priceItem price plus delivery. An FBM offer at a lower item price with a delivery charge can lose to a higher FBA price with none.
Delivery speedFBA offers carry Prime delivery promises, which helps. FBM offers need fast, reliable dispatch to compete.
Seller performanceMetrics and history count; a newer account may win less often at the same price.
Stock depthRunning low or out removes you from contention until you restock.

That is the shape of it, not a recipe. Amazon changes the weighting and does not publish it, so be wary of anyone selling an exact formula.

When nobody has the box

Sometimes a listing shows “See all buying options” instead of an Add to Basket button. Amazon can do this when it judges the prices on offer to be uncompetitive, for example against prices elsewhere or its own recent history. Lowering into a race to the bottom is not always the fix. Check whether a single high-priced offer, a pricing error, or a temporary price spike elsewhere is behind it, and look at the price history in Keepa before you move. Our guide to reading a Keepa chart shows where Buy Box price history sits.

Checking your share

In Seller Central, Reports › Business Reports › Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item shows a Featured Offer (Buy Box) percentage per ASIN for the date range you pick. Use it to spot listings where your share has dropped and look at what changed: a new seller, Amazon itself joining, a price you let drift, or a stock gap.

Repricer rules that save money

A repricer with only a floor will happily sit at your break-even for weeks. Set a ceiling at your target price as well as a floor, and make the floor include every fee, not just the cost of goods. Our worked fee example shows what goes into break-even, and the repricer guide for small catalogues compares tools.
