Quick answer
SmartScout is a wholesale-and-arbitrage research tool built primarily for amazon.com but works on amazon.co.uk with most features intact. For UK sellers it's most valuable for brand discovery (finding underpenetrated brands with low competitor count) and seller tracking (reverse-engineering successful competitors). For pure OA workflow it's overkill — Keepa + SellerAmp do that better. Worth paying for if you're scaling into wholesale at £15K+/m monthly profit. Skip until then.
What SmartScout actually is
SmartScout is a database of every product, brand, and seller on Amazon, with proprietary metrics layered on top:
- Brand database: 1.5M+ brands with monthly revenue estimates, FBA seller count, Amazon-as-seller stock-rate, average price, sub-category performance
- Seller database: track competitor sellers, see their inventory breadth, estimate their monthly revenue
- Niche analysis: find subcategories with lopsided competition (low FBA seller count + high demand)
- Search-volume estimates: per ASIN and per keyword (US-focused; UK data thinner)
- Chrome extension: live overlay on Amazon listings showing brand stats
It's marketed as "the wholesale tool", but it's used widely across OA, A2A, and PL workflows.
Does it work for amazon.co.uk?
Most core features work on UK marketplace once you switch the domain in settings:
| Feature | UK support | Quality vs US |
|---|---|---|
| Brand database | ✅ Full | 90% — slightly lower brand coverage in niche UK categories |
| Seller tracking | ✅ Full | 95% — same accuracy as US |
| Niche discovery | ✅ Full | 85% — UK subcategory data thinner |
| Live pricing | ✅ Full | 100% — pulls direct from amazon.co.uk |
| Search volume | ⚠️ Partial | 60% — UK search-volume estimates noisier than US |
| Keyword research | ⚠️ Partial | 60% — recommend Helium 10 for UK keywords if doing PL |
For pure UK arbitrage, the UK data is good enough. For UK private label, you'll want Helium 10 or Jungle Scout for keyword work and use SmartScout for brand discovery only.
What we use it for inside Emporify
We pay for SmartScout's "Pro" tier (~$97/month). Our actual usage breaks down:
1. Wholesale brand discovery (60% of our usage)
We filter the brand database to:
- Estimated monthly revenue: £15K–£200K (sweet spot — large enough to be worth approaching, small enough not to have established UK distribution)
- Amazon-as-seller stock rate: <30% (avoid brands Amazon dominates)
- FBA seller count: 3–8 (some competition validates demand, but not race-to-bottom)
- Average price: £15–£60 (our preferred margin band)
This typically returns 50–150 candidate brands per filter pass. We then send sourcing emails to brand owners. Hit rate on getting a wholesale account: ~5%. Of those, ~30% become profitable suppliers. So roughly 150 brands → 7 accounts → 2 active suppliers per pass.
2. Competitor seller analysis (20%)
When we find a competitor crushing a niche, we look up their seller profile, see their other ASINs, and reverse-engineer what's working. This is how we found 2 of our top-5 brands in 2025.
3. ASIN history & market share validation (15%)
For wholesale buying, we want confidence the demand is real. SmartScout shows us "what % of this market does Brand X own" and "what's their 90-day trend".
4. Random rabbit-hole exploration (5%)
Once a quarter we just browse niches we don't currently serve. Found one £100K/year niche this way (still in pipeline).
What it's NOT good for
Not good for: pure online arbitrage. If you're sourcing one SKU at a time from UK retailers to flip, you don't need SmartScout. You need Keepa + SellerAmp. SmartScout's strengths are at the brand and category level, not the individual ASIN level.
Not good for: complete beginners. If you don't yet know which categories to source from, SmartScout's data overload won't help you decide. Pick a category first, then SmartScout helps you find brands inside it.
Not good for: keyword research for UK private label. Helium 10 (helium10 vs junglescout uk) does that better in 2026.
Pricing
SmartScout has 4 tiers as of May 2026:
| Tier | Cost (annual) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/mo | One-off lookups, no Chrome extension limits |
| Essentials | $69/mo | Most established arbitrage sellers |
| Pro | $97/mo | Wholesale-focused — what we use |
| Business | $187/mo | Full data export + team seats |
There's a 7-day free trial. Use it ruthlessly — extract every brand candidate you'd want in week 1, then decide if the ongoing subscription pays back.
Cost reality: £97/month is real money. At our scale, finding one new wholesale brand = £400–£1,500/month profit, so the tool pays for itself fast. At pre-£15K/m monthly profit, it doesn't.
Compared to alternatives
| Tool | Strength | Weakness | UK-specific |
|---|---|---|---|
| SmartScout | Brand & seller database depth | Subscription cost; UK data slightly thinner than US | Works on amazon.co.uk |
| Keepa Product Finder | Best for finding underpriced ASINs at the listing level | No brand-level analysis; no seller tracking | Native UK |
| Helium 10 Black Box | Keyword + listing research for PL | Built for PL, not arbitrage; expensive at scale | UK marketplace supported |
| Jungle Scout | Onboarding, training, niche scoring | Lighter brand database than SmartScout | UK marketplace supported |
| Manual research (Amazon search + Keepa) | Free | Slow; missing data layers | Native UK |
For brand discovery specifically, SmartScout is the best. For everything else, you have cheaper alternatives.
Setup — first 30 minutes
If you're trialling it:
- Sign up for the 7-day free trial.
- In Settings → Marketplace, switch to United Kingdom (amazon.co.uk).
- Install the Chrome extension.
- Open the brand database. Apply your filters (start with our wholesale filter set above).
- Export the top 50 brands as CSV.
- Use the seller database on each brand to see who's already selling and how successfully.
That's 30 minutes of work that gives you a 2-month sourcing pipeline.
The 5 features that earn the price (for established sellers)
These are the ones I use weekly:
1. Brand stock-rate filter
Filters to brands with low Amazon-as-seller presence. Game-changing for wholesale sourcing — Amazon-dominated brands are unwinnable anyway.
2. Seller monthly revenue estimates
Rough but directional. When I see a competitor doing £30K/m in our niche, I know the market depth is there.
3. Brand SKU breadth
How many products a brand has on Amazon. Useful for predicting whether a wholesale relationship will yield a single SKU or a portfolio.
4. Listing growth rate
SmartScout shows a brand's 30/90/365-day revenue trajectory. We avoid declining brands; we double down on accelerating ones.
5. Seller-of-the-buy-box history
Per ASIN, you can see who's held the buy box over time. Validates whether the listing is winnable for a new entrant.
What's not worth paying SmartScout extra for
The "AI Insights" features are mostly ChatGPT-wrapped commentary on data you can read directly. Skip the higher tiers if you're paying just for those.
The "search volume" is best-effort — for serious keyword research, use Helium 10 (helium10 vs junglescout uk).
The team-seat tier is overkill until you have 3+ people doing sourcing.
Should you buy it?
| Your situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Pure OA seller under £5K/m revenue | Skip. Use Keepa + SellerAmp instead. |
| OA + dabbling in wholesale | Trial it free for 7 days. Decide based on whether you find 5+ leads in week 1. |
| Wholesale-focused at £15K+/m profit | Buy Pro tier. The brand database alone earns its keep. |
| Pure private label | Skip — use Helium 10 or Jungle Scout. SmartScout's keyword data is too thin for PL. |
| Multi-channel (OA + wholesale + PL) | Buy Essentials or Pro. The cross-tool view of who's selling what is hard to replicate. |
FAQ
Does SmartScout work in the UK?
Yes — switch the marketplace to United Kingdom in settings. Most features work fully (brand database, seller tracking, live pricing). UK-specific search-volume data is thinner than US.
Is SmartScout worth it for Amazon UK arbitrage?
Only if you're doing wholesale or scaling past £15K/m monthly profit. For pure OA, Keepa + SellerAmp do the job at a fifth of the cost.
How much does SmartScout cost in the UK?
US-priced. Pro tier is $97/month annually billed (~£77/month). The Starter tier at $29/mo is enough for occasional lookups.
What's the best alternative to SmartScout for UK sellers?
For OA: Keepa Product Finder + SellerAmp SAS. For PL keyword research: Helium 10. For mid-stage wholesale: there's no real direct alternative to SmartScout's brand database — try the free trial first.
Can SmartScout's Chrome extension be used on amazon.co.uk?
Yes. Once you've set the marketplace to UK in your account settings, the Chrome extension auto-detects and overlays UK-specific data on amazon.co.uk listings.
Is SmartScout better than Helium 10 for UK Amazon?
Different jobs. SmartScout is best for brand and seller research (wholesale, arbitrage). Helium 10 is best for keyword and listing research (private label). Most £15K+/m sellers use both.
How accurate are SmartScout's revenue estimates for UK brands?
Directionally accurate. Within ±20% is typical. Trust the rank order (which brand makes more), not the absolute number.
